Indian Mysore Nuggets
Received 10/20/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Coffee was introduced into India when the first coffee crop was grown in the Chikkamagaluru Hills during 1670 AD. According to the article Origins of Coffee, the saint Baba Budan on his pilgrimage to Mecca traveled through the seaport of Mocha, Yemen where he discovered coffee. To introduce its taste to India, he wrapped seven coffee beans around his belly and got them out of Arabia. On his return home, he planted the beans in the hills of Chikkamagaluru, which are now named Baba Budan Hills in his honor.
The Indian coffee district of Mysore is the location of the gold fields in India, hence the name "Nuggets". The overall taste profile is very unique, with spicy overtones. You find hints of earthiness that is very interesting and exotic, similar to Indonesian origins like Sulawesi and Sumatra. There are hints of spice (perhaps because India coffees are often grown with cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves and pepper ) You will find this exotic coffee to be sweet, spicy, super rich with a deep earthy sweet black baking chocolate taste. There's the unmistakable hint of hot leather saddles and the spice of Muscat raisins. I was shocked by my first cup, I thought I had tasted everything!
El Salvador Cerro las Ranas
Received 10/20/2008
Grown in Santa Ana, El Salvador between the Apenaca and Ateno mountain ranges, the farm takes its name from a lagoon that is populated by thousands of frogs (Cerro Las Ranas means Hill of the Frogs). Ripe red cherry is picked and milled in a process that is becoming more and more common throughout Central America. The cherry is processed normally and the coffee is then immediately sent to the clay drying patios still covered in the sweet mucilage where it is laid out, raked and turned to ensure even drying. This process (called Pulped Natural or Honey) imparts a subtle sweetness and fruit note, lending an atypical complexity to the cup. You will find hints of berry, lemon, and citrus flavors with a distinct caramel chocolate undertone here, along with the earthy flavors inherent to the region.
Tanzania Ruvuma Peaberry
Received 10/20/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Tanzania is the world's largest producer of exceptional sun dried peaberry coffees. Coffees from Ruvuma province are grown between the Mozambique border and the eastern shore of Lake Malawion on the volcanic soils of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. Farmers Using the modern pulping mills are paid more than the prevailing home-processed price for their cherry. This is despite the fact that they do not have the work of processing at home. In return, they are expected to take greater care in tending their coffee and in particular to their harvesting of it. They are also paid a bonus if the season is a profitable one.
This great Tanzania coffee exhibits intense flavors of bright lemon, cherry and a floral-toned honey sweetness with thick, full syrupy body that finishes with hints of cedar and cinnamon.
Sumatra Mandeling
Received 10/20/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Mandheling is the Indonesian ethnic group most involved in coffee production in the South Tapanuli region of Indonesia. Traditional Sumatra coffee sports a heavy body that is well known for its excellent balance and acidity. Most often it is the picking, preparation and processing that determines the character of a fine Sumatra coffee.
Heavy, dark, musky, earthy - Sumatra drinkers are looking for the big flavor punch. This Sumatra is a superb coffee, very clean and powerful, with no imperfections whatsoever in the green beans or the roasted flavor.
Colombian Supremo Huila Valencia
Received 1/20/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
A classic, the very reason why Colombian coffees are so widely loved and well received. I often say "Colombian provides a great introduction to specialty coffee, With a well rounded, mild flavor."
Huila Valencia is very well balanced, with good body, strong rich aroma, brightness and flavor. This Supremo sized bean delivers a nutty chocolate sweetness with undertones of sweet caramel and a soft buttery finish.

A Tanzania Success Story
Of the many African coffees roasted in our shop, Tanzanian Ruvuma has a loyal following of folks that wait patiently for "a good year". We have seen truly worthy Ruvuma once every two to three years, and I always hear the laments when this great bean is unavailable due to inconstant cup quality after a wet harvest season.
Geographically, Tanzania claims Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti National Park, the Selous Game Reserve (reportedly the largest in Africa with over 50,000 elephants), a lush coastal strip and the emerald isle of Zanzibar. It is bordered by Kenya, Mozambique, Zaire, Burundi, and Rwanda, with the Indian Ocean to the east.
Tanzanian Ruvuma coffee is grown on the volcanic soils of its southernmost region. Until recently farmers usually picked the coffee early to pay debts. It was processed at home using hand-pulpers, buckets and dirty water, then dried on the ground.
Pulperies were built in the early 1960's and again in the 1980's, but by the 1990's almost all had fallen idle. Working with villagers, a pair of entrepreneurs by the name of Satish Soochak and Alexander Mapunda invested in rehabilitating neglected pulperies and building new ones. Others have followed their lead and Mbinga (Ruvuma) coffee is now appreciated by buyers around the world.
Farmers that use modern pulping mills are paid more than the home-processed price for their cherry. In return, they are expected to take greater care in the harvesting of their coffee. If the season is a profitable one, they get a bonus.

Received 9/08/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Peru Organic, Fair Trade, Shade Grown
Ccochapampa is in the Cuzco region of south-central Peru and is comprised of 150 small family farms. Sold under the Fair Trade umbrella organization of COCLA, this coffee cooperative is located east of the Incan city of Machu Picchu and is comprised of more than 25% women, who pass on their agricultural skills and knowledge from generation to generation.
This is an exceptional Peruvian coffee with body that is silky smooth, solid and dense; like fresh cut oak that hits you with the first sip. The cup has wonderful chocolate and nut aromas. It's bittersweet with a spicy herbal essence and a slightly earthy edge.
Guatemalan Huehuetanango El Injertal
Received 9/08/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
At an elevation of over a mile high, El Injertal is a third generation family farm located in the Huehuetenango region of western Guatemala. Favorable tropic growing conditions have produced another outstanding bean. We experienced a creamy, almond-like cup, with hints of milk chocolate. Subtle caramel notes accentuate this popular Central American coffee complete with a light syrupy finish.
Whenever I'm asked to recommend the most popular coffee in the shop, we recommend Guatemalan coffee. Well known for perfect balance of body and acidity, Guats perform well in any coffee machine. This coffee is also my favorite for iced coffee - remember to freeze your morning leftovers into coffee cubes!

A Colombian Experience - Las Mujeres de Guayata
Down in a warm moist valley along the eastern cordillera of the Colombian Andes lies the coffee growing region of Boyaca and the little town of Guayata. In terms of coffee production this area is relatively minor. About 150,000 bags come from here, roughly 1 percent of Colombia's entire yield. Big farms which produce multiple containers per year are rare exceptions. The passing of lands through the generations have created a nation of very small coffee farmers.
It is the cup which always seems to lead us to buy from these marginal growing areas, and it is a pattern that repeats itself in many different countries. Eighty percent of coffee farms in the world are less than 10 hectares, and Colombian farms are no exception, where most are about 3-4 hectares.
The farms in Guayata yield just two to three bags per year. 2-3 bags per year? Why bother? Well, despite this coffee coming from what amounts to little morethan a cottage industry, it is very interesting, and at this point you'd have to call it an antique. 100% fully washed Colombian typica, sun-dried very slowly in an area that is wet and cloudy much of the time. As a consequence, it has a very different cup profile: full bodied, soft, sweet, slightly nutty. There is very little typica like this left in Colombia. As good as the coffee is, it's Las Mujeres and their efforts which cemented our interest in the coffee. They have a very small bodega, a trained quality control person, a cupping lab, and a ton of optimism.

2lb. Sample Packs $28.00
Our new 2lb. sample packs will contain the following new seasonal coffee:
1/2lb Ethiopian Natural Sidamo
1/2lb Colombian Las Mujeres de Guayata
1/2lb Brazilian Mogiana Cocapec
1/2lb Papua New Guinea Kimel Peaberry
New coffee received 8/25/2008!

New Coffee Availability List:
Ethiopian Natural Sidamo
Received 8/25/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Natural, or "dry" processing, allows the cherries to dry completely before the seed is milled from the outer pulp and skin. This prolonged contact between the ripe fruit and the seed imparts a fruitier, more complex and wine-like coffee flavor.
This year's Natural Sidamo is an extremely fruity coffee with a multi-dimensional hint of blueberries and hickory.
Since natural Ethiopian coffee is sun dried, it is essential that dry, sunny weather prevails during the harvest. This year's weather was ideal and has contributed to excellent cupping coffees.
Colombian Las Mujeres de Guayata
Received 8/25/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
A unique, rare and great coffee from Colombia. A 100% fully washed Colombian typica, sun-dried very slowly in an area that is wet and cloudy much of the time. There is very little typica like this left in Colombia.
Eighty percent of coffee farms in the world are less than 10 hectares; most are 3-4 hectares. We roast coffee from growers whose farms yield just two to three bags per year. Coming from what is basically a cottage industry, this coffee is very interesting. The process itself is an antique.
Costa Rican Monte Crisol
Received 8/25/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Grown in a mix of Red Lateritic and lush Volcanic Soils in the West Central Valleys of Costa Rica. Aromas of Chocolate and Spices will tantalized your senses as the steam rises from your cup. This is a delicate, yet complex bean. Slightly woody, yet light, this Central American varietal finishes strong and clean. Year after year, Monte Crisol has produced a consistently superior bean. This seasons crop is no exception.
Mexican Pluma Tres Oros
Received 8/25/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Pluma Altura is one of the most renowned classifications of coffee in Mexico. Grown by a group of small Oaxacan farms, Tres Oros (three gold stars) is the mill name given to this coffee. Oaxaca is a beautiful region of Mexico, with a rich heritage of Zapotec, Mixtec, and other native cultures.
Coffee from Tres Oros is bright, with subtle maple syrup sweetened black tea notes and a golden brown liqueur finish. If you enjoy a clean mild coffee with the classic medium body of a Latin American bean, you'll love this coffee!
Brazilian Mogiana Cocapec
Received 8/25/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
We are very excited to have this Brazilian back in season! Grown on the slopes of the "Serra da Mantiqueira", this traditional Brazilian Mogiana is a sharp, sweet cup of earthy black velvet. This is a component of espresso blends that makes an outstanding coffee in its own right. This Brazilian coffee has a great depth of rich, smooth complex flavor, subtle citrus notes and a smooth, velvety finish.

Here we have an excellent opportunity, and with your support, we will build on this foundation. If you want a unique, rare and great coffee from Colombia, Las Mujeres certainly fits the bill.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
By far the most frequently asked question in the shop, "what is our most popular coffee" would have to be at the top of the list, followed by "what is your darkest, strongest roast". In answer to these two most often asked questions, I introduce to you this weeks newest coffee arrivals!
Guatemalan Huehuetanango is hands down our most popular coffee in the shop, year after year. This coffee appeals to more people across the board simply due to the fact that it's beautifully balanced, moderately sweet and deliciously complex. I never hesitate to recommend Guatemalan coffee to any newcomer sampling our unique small farm coffees.
Many of my newest customers ask for a dark roasted commercial coffee blend. Was the commercial coffee market trying to cover up something when "French Roast" became popular as a style of coffee? I consider the earthy musk and thick syrup of a truly great Sumatra Mandeling far superior to any blend of over-roasted commercial grade coffee. Indonesian coffee is always the hands down winner when looking for a strong flavor and a dark, earthy heavy cup of coffee.
2lb. Sample Packs $28.00
Our new 2lb. sample packs will contain the following new seasonal coffee:
1/2lb Guatemalan Huehuetanango El Injertal
1/2lb Sumatra Mandeling
1/2lb Bolivian Peaberry D' Montana FT Organic
1/2lb Kenya Peaberry Guama
New coffee received 8/11/2008!

New Coffee Availability List:
Guatemalan Huehuetanango El Injertal

Favorable tropic growing conditions have produced another outstanding bean. We experienced a creamy, almond-like cup, with hints of milk chocolate. Subtle caramel notes accentuate this popular Central American coffee complete with a light syrupy finish.

Heavy, dark, musky, earthy - Sumatra drinkers are looking for the big flavor punch. This Sumatra is a superb coffee, very clean and powerful, with no imperfections whatsoever in the green beans or the roasted flavor.
*****************************
I'm often asked how to keep coffee fresh. It's always my recommendation that you order only what you can drink quickly, no more than 3 or 4 weeks worth of coffee at most. Remove your fresh roast from the paper shipping bags and place it in air-tight glass jars. place these glass jars in a cool, dry place and avoid freezing or refrigeration. Freezing is a long-term storage solution, and coffee once frozen is by definition no longer "fresh". Refrigerators are far too wet for the dry storage of coffee, as the beans will quickly absorb any moisture available and become stale.
Lastly, I'm often asked if a strong dark roast contains more or less caffeine. As Caffeine and other organic molecules responsible for the euphoric and uplifting effects of coffee are destroyed by heat, we recite the age old poem: "The lighter the bean, the higher the caffeine". Naturally many growing factors also contribute to the caffeine content as well as the plant type: Robusta coffee is unusually high in caffeine content, but extremely strong tasting. This type of coffee lends itself well to canning and other commercial coffee processes. Tastier and more prized Arabica specialty coffees tend to be more conservative by nature.

Celebrate Peaberry Coffee!
Always a big favorite, I receive more requests for Peaberry coffees than for any other type. Peaberries are a small round bean that resembles a coffee "pea". Typically only 3-5% of harvested coffee is peaberry. It occurs when the pit of the coffee cherry does not split into the usual two halves, rather it forms one pea or pearl-shaped bean. Since the peaberry gets all the nutrients and flavor of two beans in one, it is thus more acidic and contains more fruit. Hence the term "berry". The peaberry roasts very evenly in drum style roasters, as it has no flat sides and therefore rolls continually throughout the roast. Coffee lovers who ask for peaberry are fond of the slightly spicier flavors notable when these smaller beans are left longer on the bush to ripen.
This week we are featuring two stunning Peaberries; Kenya Guama, a high grown African, and New Guinea, one of our favorite Indonesian coffees. Both of these Peaberry varietals are clean, washed, modern coffees; uniform, consistent and exploding with flavor!
2lb. Sample Packs $28.00
Our new 2lb. sample packs will contain the following new seasonal coffee:
1/2lb Kenya Peaberry Guama
1/2lb Papua New Guinea Kimel Peaberry
1/2lb Bolivian Peaberry de Montana
1/2lb El Salvador Cerro las Ranas
New coffee received 7/21/2008!
*****************************
New Coffee Availability List:
Kenya Peaberry Guama
Received 7/21/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Another heavenly small crop Kenya Peaberry, grown in Guama and sold at the Kenya coffee auctions. A special note about the quality of this coffee - after it is bought at auction in small lots ranging in size from 13 to 88 bags, each one of these lots has to clear a gauntlet of coffee cuppers. After a rigorous pre-screening for the best lots, our favorites are selected in a blind cupping. No other origin gives us the opportunity to evaluate coffee this thoroughly. Bright and sweet, this peaberry has a pronounced classic Kenya taste and feel - we experienced an intense lemon peel explosion when we first cupped this coffee!
Papua New Guinea Kimel Peaberry
Received 7/21/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
From the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, grown in the Wahgi River Valley. This Kimel offers a taste of caramel and cream, rounded out with an undertone of a cappuccino flan flavor - an intriguing, hearty Indonesian Peaberry. You will find this coffee has tons of body with a touch of sweetness, heavy but finishes clean and smooth.

The best Bolivian coffees have a very sweet, very balanced, nutty cup, both creamy and fruity, with tones of prunes and black cherry.
El Salvador Cerro las Ranas
Received 6/23/2008 1lb. bag $12.99

Chiapas is a mountainous region of southern Mexico, lying between Oaxaca and northern Guatemala. This coffee is grown at a minimum altitude of 1,200 meters, where the micro-climate, richness of soil, and delicate balance of humidity supply the perfect conditions for growing coffee. Typically, Mexican coffees are soft and smooth, with a light to medium body. PROISH produces the best of Chiapas coffee - the cream of the crop in Mexican Organics. This coffee is sharp and tangy, bright and complex; very well balanced. There's a powerful snap to the finish of this coffee I've not yet experienced in a Mexican coffee. Delicious!

Summer is Time for Adventure!
This list of new coffee is short and sweet - it's time for you to make those summer plans! Be sure you have your favorite coffee on board before beginning your summer adventure, or have fresh roast delivered in just two days to any USPS Postal Mail address.
2lb. Sample Packs $28.00
Our new 2lb. sample packs will contain the following Coffee:
1/2lb Guatemalan Huehuetanango La Providencia
1/2lb Costa Rican Monte Crisol
1/2lb Tanzania Peaberry, Hope Project
1/2lb Sumatra Mandeling Grade 1
New coffee received 6/09/2008!
*****************************
New Coffee Availability List:
Guatemalan Huehuetanango La Providencia
Received 06/09/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Huehuetenango is a rugged area in northwestern Guatemala where some of the best coffee varieties in the world can be grown. Topping out at 12,540 feet is San Pedro Necta. This sub region of Huehue is historically famous for its phenomenal coffee. La Providencia is a private farm that has been passed down from generation to generation within the Palacios family.
Tanzania Peaberry, Hope Project
Received 6/09/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
The Hope Project has constructed over 23 coffee washing and drying stations to assist the many farmers who lacked water or processing equipment. The Project pays farmers a price which is proportionally higher than the market price they would otherwise achieve, and then offers a second quality-related payment.
This Tanzanian Peaberry displays the characteristics of Kenyan coffee, though lighter in acidity and fuller in body. I find it full of flavor, snappy and refreshingly bright, as an African coffee should be. This is a washed coffee with a great European prep, more creamy than fruity.
Sumatra Mandeling Grade 1
Received 6/09/2008 1lb.

Brazil is the largest tropical country on earth, containing one third of the world's rain forests. The Cerrado is found on the high, flat, central plateau of Brazil, and is the richest and most biodiverse woodland-savanna in the entire world. Brazil coffee is nutty, sweet, low-acid, and develops an exceptionally bittersweet and chocolate cup with a velvety mouth feel.
Colombian Mesa De Santos
Received 5/27/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Grower Certified Organic, Fair Trade, Bird Friendly, Rain Forest Alliance
"Mesa de los Santos" is grown near the town of Los Santos within the Bucaramanga region of Colombia. A lovely coffee from one of the oldest, most responsible and well run estates in Colombia, the farmers use a traditional process of cultivation that is organically grown, Rainforest Alliance Certified, and Bird Friendly. This medium to heavy bodied coffee is an excellent example of a fine Colombian. With a sweet aroma and a hint of citrus & chocolate, it is bright, well-rounded, and somewhat floral.
Mexican Pluma Tres Oros
Received 5/27/2008 1lb.
Nicaragua Segovia
Received 5/27/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Nueva Segovia is in Northern Nicaragua, a mountainous area rich with pine forests, hot springs, waterfalls, and coffee. Fertile soils and high altitude growing has produced a smooth, medium bodied coffee with mellow characteristics. Hints of fennel and cardamum begin a cup that finishes with a subtle, sweet toasted flavor.
Panama Boquete Classico
Received 5/27/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
A well rounded, medium bodied coffee with an exemplary finish of a true classic Central American coffee. The Boquete Classico is slightly dry, with black pepper and almond undertones. You'll find this Panamanian coffee extremely clean, smooth and refreshingly simple. Another wonderful coffee exported by the Casa Ruiz Estates.
