A Colombian Experience - Las Mujeres de Guayata

Down in a warm moist valley along the eastern cordillera of the Colombian Andes lies the coffee growing region of Boyaca and the little town of Guayata. In terms of coffee production this area is relatively minor. About 150,000 bags come from here, roughly 1 percent of Colombia's entire yield. Big farms which produce multiple containers per year are rare exceptions. The passing of lands through the generations have created a nation of very small coffee farmers.

It is the cup which always seems to lead us to buy from these marginal growing areas, and it is a pattern that repeats itself in many different countries. Eighty percent of coffee farms in the world are less than 10 hectares, and Colombian farms are no exception, where most are about 3-4 hectares.

The farms in Guayata yield just two to three bags per year. 2-3 bags per year? Why bother? Well, despite this coffee coming from what amounts to little morethan a cottage industry, it is very interesting, and at this point you'd have to call it an antique. 100% fully washed Colombian typica, sun-dried very slowly in an area that is wet and cloudy much of the time. As a consequence, it has a very different cup profile: full bodied, soft, sweet, slightly nutty. There is very little typica like this left in Colombia. As good as the coffee is, it's Las Mujeres and their efforts which cemented our interest in the coffee. They have a very small bodega, a trained quality control person, a cupping lab, and a ton of optimism.

New Coffee Availability List:

Ethiopian Natural Sidamo
Received 8/25/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Natural, or "dry" processing, allows the cherries to dry completely before the seed is milled from the outer pulp and skin. This prolonged contact between the ripe fruit and the seed imparts a fruitier, more complex and wine-like coffee flavor.

This year's Natural Sidamo is an extremely fruity coffee with a multi-dimensional hint of blueberries and hickory.

Since natural Ethiopian coffee is sun dried, it is essential that dry, sunny weather prevails during the harvest. This year's weather was ideal and has contributed to excellent cupping coffees.

Colombian Las Mujeres de Guayata

Grown in a mix of Red Lateritic and lush Volcanic Soils in the West Central Valleys of Costa Rica. Aromas of Chocolate and Spices will tantalized your senses as the steam rises from your cup. This is a delicate, yet complex bean. Slightly woody, yet light, this Central American varietal finishes strong and clean. Year after year, Monte Crisol has produced a consistently superior bean. This seasons crop is no exception.

Pluma Altura is one of the most renowned classifications of coffee in Mexico. Grown by a group of small Oaxacan farms, Tres Oros (three gold stars) is the mill name given to this coffee. Oaxaca is a beautiful region of Mexico, with a rich heritage of Zapotec, Mixtec, and other native cultures.

Coffee from Tres Oros is bright, with subtle maple syrup sweetened black tea notes and a golden brown liqueur finish. If you enjoy a clean mild coffee with the classic medium body of a Latin American bean, you'll love this coffee!

We are very excited to have this Brazilian back in season! Grown on the slopes of the "Serra da Mantiqueira", this traditional Brazilian Mogiana is a sharp, sweet cup of earthy black velvet.
