Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

By far the most frequently asked question in the shop, "what is our most popular coffee" would have to be at the top of the list, followed by "what is your darkest, strongest roast". In answer to these two most often asked questions, I introduce to you this weeks newest coffee arrivals!

Guatemalan Huehuetanango is hands down our most popular coffee in the shop, year after year. This coffee appeals to more people across the board simply due to the fact that it's beautifully balanced, moderately sweet and deliciously complex. I never hesitate to recommend Guatemalan coffee to any newcomer sampling our unique small farm coffees.

Many of my newest customers ask for a dark roasted commercial coffee blend. Was the commercial coffee market trying to cover up something when "French Roast" became popular as a style of coffee? I consider the earthy musk and thick syrup of a truly great Sumatra Mandeling far superior to any blend of over-roasted commercial grade coffee. Indonesian coffee is always the hands down winner when looking for a strong flavor and a dark, earthy heavy cup of coffee.

New Coffee Availability List:

Guatemalan Huehuetanango El Injertal
Received 8/11/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
At an elevation of over a mile high, El Injertal is a third generation family farm located in the Huehuetenango region of western Guatemala. Favorable tropic growing conditions have produced another outstanding bean. We experienced a creamy, almond-like cup, with hints of milk chocolate. Subtle caramel notes accentuate this popular Central American coffee complete with a light syrupy finish.

Whenever I'm asked to recommend the most popular coffee in the shop, we recommend Guatemalan coffee. Well known for perfect balance of body and acidity, Guats perform well in any coffee machine. This coffee is also my favorite for iced coffee - remember to freeze your morning leftovers into coffee cubes!

Sumatra Mandeling
Received 8/11/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Mandheling is the Indonesian ethnic group most involved in coffee production in the South Tapanuli region of Indonesia. Traditional Sumatra coffee sports a heavy body that is well known for its excellent balance and acidity. Most often it is the picking, preparation and processing that determines the character of a fine Sumatra coffee.

Heavy, dark, musky, earthy - Sumatra drinkers are looking for the big flavor punch. This Sumatra is a superb coffee, very clean and powerful, with no imperfections whatsoever in the green beans or the roasted flavor.

I'm often asked how to keep coffee fresh. It's always my recommendation that you order only what you can drink quickly, no more than 3 or 4 weeks worth of coffee at most. Remove your fresh roast from the paper shipping bags and place it in air-tight glass jars. place these glass jars in a cool, dry place and avoid freezing or refrigeration. Freezing is a long-term storage solution, and coffee once frozen is by definition no longer "fresh". Refrigerators are far too wet for the dry storage of coffee, as the beans will quickly absorb any moisture available and become stale.

Lastly, I'm often asked if a strong dark roast contains more or less caffeine. As Caffeine and other organic molecules responsible for the euphoric and uplifting effects of coffee are destroyed by heat, we recite the age old poem: "The lighter the bean, the higher the caffeine". Naturally many growing factors also contribute to the caffeine content as well as the plant type: Robusta coffee is unusually high in caffeine content, but extremely strong tasting. This type of coffee lends itself well to canning and other commercial coffee processes. Tastier and more prized Arabica specialty coffees tend to be more conservative by nature.
