What Makes it Christmas in July?

A call to my Importer for his monthly recommendation yielded little in the way of new coffee. He said, "The Central American season has ended, and we are all waiting for Southern Hemisphere coffees". For us here at OBR, this meant dipping into our stash of holiday beans.

This stash includes the stunning Bolivian Peaberry from high in the Andes Mountains and the Spicy Salvador Pulp Natural from Cerro las Ranas. Little did we know we were saving these delicious coffees for a sunny day!

New Coffee Availability List:

Bolivian Peaberry de Montana FT Organic
Received 06/23/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Grower Certified Organic, Fair Trade, Peaberry
Nicknamed the "Rooftop of the World" because of its high elevation in the Andes Mountains, Bolivia has a landscape of snow-topped mountain peaks, broad, windswept plateaus and tropical rain forests. The Bolivian coffee industry has been fine-tuning itself by improving post-harvest techniques, mostly at the wet-and dry-milling stages. D' Montana is home to an 85 family Co-Op in the highlands east of La Paz, producing a stunning Peaberry coffee. The best Bolivian coffees have a very sweet, very balanced, nutty cup, both creamy and fruity, with tones of prunes and black cherry.

El Salvador Cerro las Ranas
Received 6/23/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Grown in Santa Ana, El Salvador between the Apenaca and Ateno mountain ranges, the farm takes its name from a lagoon that is populated by thousands of frogs (Cerro Las Ranas means Hill of the Frogs). Ripe red cherry is picked and milled in a process that is becoming more and more common throughout Central America. The cherry is processed normally and the coffee is then immediately sent to the clay drying patios still covered in the sweet mucilage where it is laid out, raked and turned to ensure even drying. This process (called Pulped Natural or Honey) imparts a subtle sweetness and fruit note, lending an atypical complexity to the cup.
