Mysore Indian Nuggets!

A surprise offering of Indian Mysore Nuggets has arrived in the shop. Some of you will remember from last year the exciting spicy flavor of these unique beans. I'm looking at 700lbs. of green Mysore as I type. There is no more available this year, to my knowledge. While this sounds like quite a stash, lately I've found if there's good demand, this will only last 10 to 14 days before we are sold out. Be sure and make room in your pantry for a taste of this coffee!

A special note for Roasters Choice Club members:
This is one of the few months that has 5 Wednesdays, so there will be no Club coffee shipping next Wednesday. This only happens two or three times a year, but it can be confusing. If you need your beans delivered a week early, please give us a call or an email so we can take care of you!

New coffee received 10/20/2008!

Indian Mysore Nuggets
Received 10/20/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Coffee was introduced into India when the first coffee crop was grown in the Chikkamagaluru Hills during 1670 AD. According to the article Origins of Coffee, the saint Baba Budan on his pilgrimage to Mecca traveled through the seaport of Mocha, Yemen where he discovered coffee. To introduce its taste to India, he wrapped seven coffee beans around his belly and got them out of Arabia. On his return home, he planted the beans in the hills of Chikkamagaluru, which are now named Baba Budan Hills in his honor.

The Indian coffee district of Mysore is the location of the gold fields in India, hence the name "Nuggets". The overall taste profile is very unique, with spicy overtones. You find hints of earthiness that is very interesting and exotic, similar to Indonesian origins like Sulawesi and Sumatra. There are hints of spice (perhaps because India coffees are often grown with cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves and pepper ) You will find this exotic coffee to be sweet, spicy, super rich with a deep earthy sweet black baking chocolate taste. There's the unmistakable hint of hot leather saddles and the spice of Muscat raisins. I was shocked by my first cup, I thought I had tasted everything!

El Salvador Cerro las Ranas
Received 10/20/2008
Grown in Santa Ana, El Salvador between the Apenaca and Ateno mountain ranges, the farm takes its name from a lagoon that is populated by thousands of frogs (Cerro Las Ranas means Hill of the Frogs). Ripe red cherry is picked and milled in a process that is becoming more and more common throughout Central America. The cherry is processed normally and the coffee is then immediately sent to the clay drying patios still covered in the sweet mucilage where it is laid out, raked and turned to ensure even drying. This process (called Pulped Natural or Honey) imparts a subtle sweetness and fruit note, lending an atypical complexity to the cup. You will find hints of berry, lemon, and citrus flavors with a distinct caramel chocolate undertone here, along with the earthy flavors inherent to the region.

Tanzania Ruvuma Peaberry
Received 10/20/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Tanzania is the world's largest producer of exceptional sun dried peaberry coffees. Coffees from Ruvuma province are grown between the Mozambique border and the eastern shore of Lake Malawion on the volcanic soils of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. Farmers Using the modern pulping mills are paid more than the prevailing home-processed price for their cherry. This is despite the fact that they do not have the work of processing at home. In return, they are expected to take greater care in tending their coffee and in particular to their harvesting of it. They are also paid a bonus if the season is a profitable one.

This great Tanzania coffee exhibits intense flavors of bright lemon, cherry and a floral-toned honey sweetness with thick, full syrupy body that finishes with hints of cedar and cinnamon.

Sumatra Mandeling
Received 10/20/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
Mandheling is the Indonesian ethnic group most involved in coffee production in the South Tapanuli region of Indonesia. Traditional Sumatra coffee sports a heavy body that is well known for its excellent balance and acidity. Most often it is the picking, preparation and processing that determines the character of a fine Sumatra coffee.

Heavy, dark, musky, earthy - Sumatra drinkers are looking for the big flavor punch. This Sumatra is a superb coffee, very clean and powerful, with no imperfections whatsoever in the green beans or the roasted flavor.

Colombian Supremo Huila Valencia
Received 1/20/2008 1lb. bag $12.99
A classic, the very reason why Colombian coffees are so widely loved and well received. I often say "Colombian provides a great introduction to specialty coffee, With a well rounded, mild flavor."

Huila Valencia is very well balanced, with good body, strong rich aroma, brightness and flavor. This Supremo sized bean delivers a nutty chocolate sweetness with undertones of sweet caramel and a soft buttery finish.
